This week I have the pleasure of introducing you to multi-published author Cary Morgan-Frates who has graciously agreed to answer my dirty dozen questions.
1. What influenced you to become a writer?
I’ve had stories trotting around in my head since I was a kid, and writers abound on my mother’s side of the family. Or …perhaps I write because my father used to gather us kids together at bedtime and invent stories before lights out. He had a whole slew of recurring characters, and during a recent conversation, we kids realized our mental images of those characters where identical. I hope my own characterizations are as vivid as those Dad created.
2. What do you write?
I love learning something when I read. I also love history. As one-half of Morgan O’Neill, I co-write big Time Travel Historicals with Deborah O’Neill Cordes. But beware! Our historicals are not just a matter of time, location and clothing style. We follow real history and real historical figures, and endeavor to bring back to life, for the space of our novels, the lives of interesting, dynamic, and history-altering personalities.
In my solo work, I write Contemporary Romance/Adventure with as much humor as I can justifiably add to the story. There always seems to be a sailboat either prominently displayed, or somewhere in the scenery in my solo work.
3. What type of hero is your favorite?
Whether I’m reading or writing, I want real, flawed men with open minds, a great sense of humor, and wonderful bodies. Wait, did I say ‘real’???
4. What’s your favorite country?
Outside the US (duh), I LOVE France and the French. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m talking about the French who live as far from Paris as possible, those whose toes go deep into the soil and the centuries. They are unfailingly kind, appreciative, and salt-of-the-earth. Ah, to enjoy some homemade Pastis with a vintner on his back patio… Oh yes, I also LOVE England, and wouldn’t’ mind spending months per year in Italy!
5. What’s your favorite city?
London? Rome? Athens? Florence? I’m not big on cities unless there’s plenty of ancient history involved.
6. What’s your favorite color?
Until a few years ago I always said red, without hesitation. Then one day I realized my house, patio chairs, car, coat, purse, fold-up umbrella….all bright yellow!
7. What is your favorite hobby?
Sailing!! Oil painting. Stone carving. Rowing. Fencing. Skiing. Swimming. Shooting. Hanging with friends/family on a sun-lit patio where beer is served and water is close by. Life takes over, of course, so some of these events are rare, but all are passions.
8. Where do you like to hang out for relaxation?
Hmm, that sun-lit patio where beer is served?
9. Do you have a favorite beverage?
Nah. Mood, time of day, and weather dictate unsweetened ice tea, beer, red wine, or Scotch. Mojitos make me gage. Champagne is nice, too.
10. What is the most unique thing about you?
You’d have to ask someone else about that. Get back to me when you find out.
11. Is there a secret that only your inner circle knows that you’re finally willing to share?
Um, no. Actually, I could potentially abandon all (yes, ALL) for a dance floor and great music, but then, I don’t think that’s a secret. ☺ I prefer to dance solo (habit from years in France), and some have called my style as ‘sensual’, although I’m not trying for that, I’m just feeling the music. My personal vision of my dance style runs more along the line of Elaine in Seinfeld. Yikes!
12. What would you like to promote?
Morgan O’Neill has an epic Elizabethan time travel series coming out with Entangled Publishing. Part One, The Thornless Rose, will arrive in November! I have two contemporary short stories with holiday/beautiful shoes themes; Red Soles at Night, Christmas Delight, and Red Soles in the Morning, Valentines Soaring, which follow the same couple through their courtship. The third and final installment, Red Soles by the Sea, will be out shortly. The series is published by Books To Go Now Publishing. And my blog, of course! More Romance Please promotes non-paranormal romance novels and their authors.
